Bathtime At Last !
The long-awaited Thermae Bath Spa now has a firm opening date August 7. Britains only natural thermal spa in the centre of Bath is a 21st-century recreation of the waters originally exploited by the Romans in the first century AD. Bath was made fashionable by royal patronage from Elizabethan times onwards, reaching its heyday in the late 18th century when the likes of Beau Nash and Jane Austen flocked to the Pump Room. Taking advantage of the 1.2 million litres of water that gush daily from three underground springs at a temperature of 40°C, the revitalised spa is expected to make a huge contribution to Baths importance as a tourist destination. Tourists Routes For Wine Fans
The German Wine Road is the oldest of its kind, but many regional wine routes crisscross the country between the North Sea and the Alps. For example, the Baden Wine Road runs about 120 miles along the western edge of the Black Forest from Baden-Baden to Weil am Rhein near the Swiss border.
Along the way, travellers pass vineyards of the Ortenau, the Kaiserstuhl and Tuniberg, the Breisgau and Markgräflerland. The Hessen Apple-wine Road begins in Frankfurt's convivial Sachsenhausen quarter and ends in picturesque Steinheim. Visitors can enjoy plenty of the "Stöffche" - as apple wine is lovingly called by the locals - in the original pubs and wine gardens along the route. The route is divided into six regional stretches; maps are available in each member community.
The Saxon Wine Road from Pirna to Diesbar-Seusslitz is one of the most important tourist roads in the state. Wine fans can find information in a handy brochure about wine production in Saxony and wine-specific tourist packages. The latter are found under sections such as "Wine and Art,"
"Wine and Handicrafts" and "Wine and Porcelain." The Saale-Unstrut Wine Road encompasses
a landscape influenced by vineyards for 1,000 years. Supraregional hiking and cycling paths as well as the Burgenland Railway run at times parallel to the wine road and offer wine fans the opportunity to get to know the land and its people. On 23 September in Freyburg, guests of the region can enjoy the sparkling "Federweisser" (new wine) from the Saale-Unstrut with tasty onion tart and crispy suckling pig cooked in a wood-burning stove.

Dickens World
The historic Medway town of Chatham (home of the Royal Historic Dockyard and the Napoleonic Fort Amherst) will add another high-profile attraction to its tourism portfolio next year. A new indoor visitor centre called Dickens World is scheduled to open at Easter 2007, basing its theme on one of Britains most widely known and best-loved authors, Charles Dickens. The location of this £62 million development is appropriate. Dickens spent most of his childhood in Chatham, where his father held a clerical post at the Naval Dockyard. Later in life Dickens lived in Higham near Rochester, which pays homage to his life and times in its annual Dickens Festival, when locals dress up in period costume. The new entertainment complex will also take visitors back to the Victorian era, recreating the atmosphere of the period with cobbled streets and specialist lighting. Besides shops, pubs and restaurants, it will contain a cinema and a 250-seater auditorium to stage live burlesque music-hall shows. An exciting theme boat ride through the old London sewers is one of its key attractions. www.dickensworld.co.uk.
