UFTAA follows closely US carriers` plans to shift costs to consumers
American Airlines (AA) has informed travel agents in USA and the Caribbean that they will charge travel agents a fee of US$ 3.50 per segment on all reservations booked on GDS systems not favoured by American Airlines. This is part of the ongoing move by airlines to shift operational air transportation costs to the consumers using Travel Agents as the intermediary and limit the availability of neutral sales channels. AirTran Airways Reports All-Time Record Traffic in July
ORLANDO, Fla., Aug. 2 -- AirTran Airways, a subsidiary of AirTran Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:AAI), today reported its July revenue passenger miles (RPMs), available seat miles (ASMs), load factor and passengers enplaned all represent all-time company records for any month in the airline's history.
AirTran Airways' traffic, measured by revenue passenger miles (RPMs), grew by 26.8 percent, to nearly 1.4 billion RPMs, on an increase of 26.0 percent in capacity, based on available seat miles (ASMs). July's load factor increased to 81.3 percent, compared to 80.8 percent in July 2005. The airline enplaned more than 1.9 million passengers in the month of July, a 20.9 percent increase from July 2005.
Online check-in to increase
SITAs (Societe Internationale de Telecommunications Aeronautiques), latest report suggest that online plane ticket sales will make up 28% of all airline ticket sales in 2006, up from 20% in 2005. This means that of the 2 billion airline passengers worldwide, approximately 560 million use the Internet to make their bookings.
SITA forecasts that in 2007, 72% of airlines worldwide will offer Web check-in services, up from 42% in 2006 in order to avoid bottlenecks of inefficiency at the airports. Further measures to avoid bottlenecks include the self-service kiosks.

Virgin Atlantic Opens New Hangar At London Gatwick Airport
Virgin Atlantic today opened its new hangar at Gatwick Airport. The Hangar, which has undergone refurbishment by the BAA, was leased to Virgin Atlantic in mid June. Prior to becoming operational the hangar needed to be fitted out with Virgin's own equipment in order for maintenance and the support functions to be carried out on the Virgin Atlantic fleet of Boeing 747-400 aircraft based at Gatwick Airport and the Virgin Nigeria Airbus A340-300.
Job Cuts Start At Varig
Brazilian airline Varig, which was sold last week, said on Friday it planned to lay off almost 60 percent of its work force as part of a restructuring plan.
The airline said in a statement that it planned to eliminate 5,500 of a total of 9,485 jobs in Brazil, cutting its work force to 3,985.

Boeing Delivers First 737 with Enhanced Short Runway Package to GOL
SEATTLE, July 31, 2006 - Boeing [NYSE: BA] on Friday delivered to GOL, Brazil's low-fare, low-cost airline, the first Next-Generation 737 with enhanced short runway landing and takeoff capabilities.
The 737-800 is the first of that model type delivered to GOL as the carrier augments capacity on domestic and regional international routes. It also is the first delivery of 67 737-800s the all-Boeing carrier has on order for delivery out to 2012. The airline currently operates 50 737s.

Americans Visiting Egypt in Record Numbers!
NEW YORK, Aug. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- More Americans are travelling to Egypt than at any time in history! American visits are now on pace to eclipse the record-setting year of 2000.
During the first six months of 2006, there were 118,044 American visits, surpassing last year's total by 20.1% and the record-setting 2000 number of 114,468 by 3%. The record-setting performance was bolstered in June 2006 when there were 19,656 American visits, a 16.6% increase over the same period in 2005.

Private investment in Mexico`s Tourism Sector booming
Exceeding US$11.6 billion, private investment in Mexicos tourism sector has already surpassed federal goals for the 2001 to 2006 period by 29 percent, reports Sectur in its latest comprehensive study on the subject. Domestic and foreign private investment reached the original US$9 billion goal in June 2005, after increasing at least 12 percent annually since 2002.
The report also shows that interest in Mexicos famous beaches remains high, with the sun and beach segment outpacing all other tourism products by garnering 48 percent of private investment. Three coastal states also ranked in the top three in amount of private investment received: Guerrero State (US$2.63 billion), Quintana Roo State (US$2.47 billion) and Nayarit State (US$92.5 million) captured almost 52 percent of the total amount invested between 2001 and 2006.

ETC President Oberascher invites newly independent Montenegro to join organisation
Podgorica / Brussels, 2 August 2006. At a meeting in Podgorica with the president of Montenegro, Filip Vujanovic, European Travel Commission (ETC) president, Arthur Oberascher, delivered a letter officially inviting the republic to join the organization. Oberascher was in Montenegro at the invitation of the country's tourism minister, Predrag Nenezic, to attend celebrations marking the new state's declaration of independence. Montenegro declared independence following a May 21 referendum that dissolved the country's union with Serbia.
The European Travel Commission is an association of National Tourism Organisations (NTOs). It was created in 1948 to promote Europe as a tourism destination to the long-haul markets outside Europe, originally in the USA and later in Canada, Latin America and Asia. It has 34 member NTOs, including 9 from outside the European Union. ETC is an independent body which is financed entirely by annual membership contributions and partnership funding.

Americans like to stay connected
According to Travel Industry Association and Synovate latest Traveler survey US travelers bring an enormous amount of technology with them on holiday to stay connected.
86% took their cell phones and 67% their digital cameras while 24% of travelers took their laptops, 21% bring their CD players and 11% brought their iPods or MP3 players.
And this number is likely to go up in the next few years due to the increasing popularity of travel-related/destination-specific podcasts and downloadable music and video.
The finding further showed that one in ten Americans bring technology with them on vacation either because they like to stay in touch with the office (10%) or because they feel they have no choice but to stay connected (9%). And six % like to actually do work for their job while on vacation.
