Latin America's hotels have a bumper year, says Deloitte
While no Latin American city makes the top 20 of Deloitte's Global Ranking Index (GRI) - in terms of revenue per available room (revPAR), many cities are climbing back from their post-Millennium lows. Only two cities - Santiago and Lima - have overtaken 2000 levels while other cities continue to move up the index, Deloitte says. Rio de Janiero leads the region in 61st position, followed by Buenos Aires and Mexico City, in 62nd and 70th places respectively. Read more.
USA says that 2007 will finally break all inbound tourism records
The US Department of Commerce (DOC) estimates that arrivals in the USA reached 50.9 million in 2006, an increase of 3% over 2005. However, the total was below the 51.2 million forecast earlier in 2006 and means that US inbound arrivals have still not returned to their 2000 peak. Moreover, the growth has not been commensurate with GDP growth and the favourable exchange rates in many major markets. Some states in the USA were clearly affected more than others, with Florida reportedly suffering a 13% decline in arrivals from abroad in the first half of the year.

An excellent 'vintage 2006' for French tourism
France kept its position as the world's top tourism destination in 2006, notching up some 78 million international tourist arrivals, an increase of 2.7% on its 2005 total. The growth follows several years of stagnation or marginal increases, and augurs well for France's continuing position at the top of the arrivals rankings. In addition, there were 116 million day trips to France in 2006. France's tourism receipts grew by an estimated 2.5% in 2006 to €34.8 billion, on course to achieve Maison de la France's target of €40 billion by 2010. Read more.

The Mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoë, recently highlighted the efforts made to strengthen the international positioning of Paris as a major cultural metropolis. The city spent €253.6 million on developing cultural life in Paris in 2006 - double the 2000 annual budget (€126.3 million). Since 2001, Paris has created numerous new cultural activities involving the circus, street arts, contemporary popular music and short films. The city has also renovated many museums, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Petit Palais. Among new institutions, the city is currently build¬ing a concert hall, the Paris Philharmonie in La Villette, dedicated to symphony music, and is converting the old Massena rail station into a centre for youth creative arts.

Greece continues to build on its Olympic success
Although only half-year figures for Greece's tourism performance in 2006 are available so far - and these show a 3.7% increase in overnights to the end of June - there is anecdotal evidence to suggest that Greece's year-round performance was better than this. The 2004 Olympics appear to have had a positive impact on city tourism and on the meetings industry in particular, say industry sources, reflecting considerable improvements made to the country's infrastructure and quality of hotels. Among the markets that increased to Greece in 2006 were France, Italy, Germany and the USA, say travel industry sources, and the cruising sector has also looked particularly healthy. Greece has been expecting a 6-7% increase in arrivals for 2006, contributing some US$42 billion to the economy. Read more.
Arosa gets serious about global warming
The Swiss ski resort of Arosa, which is looking for ways to reduce carbon emissions, is actively trying to discourage visitors from arriving by car. Train access to the resort will greatly improve next winter, say Arosa's tourism leaders, when a new direct TGV high-speed link from Paris to Chur gets underway. Visitors will be able to connect in Chur for trains to Arosa. Once in the town, a free bus service throughout the resort is being offered to all visitors.
Arosa is working to offset skiers' carbon footprint by investing in renewable energy production. The resort has established a partnership with the German firm, Climate Partner, to devise a 'climate neutral' scheme. The CO2 calculations include, among other things, the journey to and from the resort, energy used by the hotels and energy used to maintain the ski infrastructure. The carbon is offset by contributions to the Bavarian company, Schmack Biogas, to increase the amount of renewable energy it produces.
Rhône-Alpes Tourism, responsible for tourism in Lyon, Grenoble and parts of the Alps, will open representative offices in both Moscow and Shanghai this year. The Moscow representation is located within the offices of Maison de la France; the Shanghai representation will be with the offices of ERAI (Entreprise Rhône-Alpes International), the region's promotional office for exports. Russia became one of Rhône-Alpes's top ten source markets in 2005, generating 122,225 hotel nights. It is confident it can further boost this figure, particularly following the announcement from Aeroflot of a new direct Moscow-Lyon service.
Recognising the potential of tourism industry, Israel is planning to double its number of foreign tourists to over 4 million over the next five years. Ernst & Young has presented the Jewish state with its first comprehensive tourism plan to try to significantly boost visitors. One of the recommendations is to conduct a five-year, worldwide image campaign for the country, with a budget of US$250 million. This includes annual spending of US$50 million. It is estimated that with such investment, an annual increase of 510,000 tourists will be achieved. And the Israeli economy would regain US$9 for every dollar invested in marketing Israel internationally.
First estimates for 2006 show that Japan's international tourist arrivals hit a new high - 7.3 million, according to UNWTO figures - an increase of 9% on 2005. Among Japan's top foreign source markets were South Korea (1.93 million), Taiwan (1.2 million) and mainland China (730,000). Europe generated 670,000 million arrivals and the USA 760,000. Nevertheless, despite healthy inbound growth, there is still a large imbalance between inbound and outbound travel. First estimates indicate there were 17.7 million outbound trips from Japan last year, up by 1.4% on 2005. By 2010, the number of Japanese outbound travellers could reach 20 million while the inbound target is 10 million.

The three new hotel announcements, all due to be completed in 2010, are in Paris - where Mandarin has had difficulty securing an appropriate site, but has now secured an exclusive rue St Honoré location for its 150-room hotel - Guangzhou (a contemporary design with 340 rooms and 70 serviced apartments in one of China's wealthiest cities) and Taipei (300 rooms in a mixed-use complex in the heart of the business district). These three will bring Mandarin's tally of hotels under development to 14. Read more.

Berlin in greater demand than ever as a convention venue
Participants in the Associations Conference Forum (AC Forum) displayed keen interest in the holding of large scale medical conventions in the German capital during a presentation that took place in the ICC Berlin. According to a recent survey by the International Congress & Convention Association (ICCA), Amsterdam, Berlin ranks fourth in the world. By 2008 no less than 71 major conventions will have been held by various economic and scientific associations in the ICC Berlin, with a total attendance of 280,000. This has been confirmed by steadily increasing demand over many years, which has made this the worlds leading convention centre for large scale medical conferences with more than 4,000 participants.
During their recent 8th General Meeting at the Hotel Palace in Berlin delegates to the AC Forum confirmed their intention of organising more large medical conventions with accompanying exhibitions in Berlin. With its International Congress Center Berlin (ICC Berlin) in particular, the city meets the highest standards required of a convention venue in terms of infrastructure and technical facilities. The associations represented by the AC Forum are responsible for staging conventions with attendances ranging from 3,500 to 30,000. A decision by the delegates in favour of Berlin would represent a potential purchasing power totalling 400 million euros.

The meetings industry on the Spanish Balearic islands has been given a boost by the announcement of a new conference centre for Palma. The centre, which is to be designed by Navarre architect Patxi Mangado, will be set on the city's waterfront, and will have capacity for 2,000 delegates. As well as a range of meeting and exhibition space, and an auditorium, there will be underground parking for 400 cars.
Warsaw gets a much-needed new convention centre this month when the 314-room Hilton opens this month in the Polish capital. The main feature of the Hilton Warsaw is its 3,000 square metres of flexible business event space - an area twice as large as any other meeting space currently available in Warsaw's hotels, according to Hilton. There is a 1,406 square metre pillar-less ballroom, designed for large-scale launches and conventions, which can accommodate 1,850 delegates, but it can also be rapidly transformed into several smaller spaces, or refigured for dining.
Dossierkosten

Amadeus adopts new ACRISS Car Classification System worldwide to enhance car rental service for travel agents
Clearer car classification system and up-selling possibilities reduce search time and meet customer needs
Vilvoorde, Belgium, 29 March: Amadeus, a global leader in technology and distribution solutions for the travel and tourism industry, today announced vehicle classification enhancements to its car rental distribution system in line with the recommendations of the Association of Car Rental Industry System Standards (ACRISS).
The adoption of the new vehicle classification codes will allow travel agents to benefit from a clearer classification system answering the car rental needs of their customers. In addition, Amadeus also implemented the introduction of pseudo codes, which reduce the amount of time an agent needs to spend searching within a specified group for vehicles such as vans or SUVs. New indicators have been incorporated into the display to clearly identify the search results that are exact matches to the search criteria, alternate vehicle availability and up-selling possibilities.

During the past three years, some 27 million US travellers - or 17% of total American leisure travellers - have specifically travelled for culinary and wine-related experiences. This is the finding of a new study, commissioned by the Travel Industry Association of America (TIA) in partnership with Gourmet magazine and the International Culinary Tourism Association. The study reveals that culinary travellers are generally younger, more affluent and better educated than non-culinary travellers and typically seek unique experiences when travelling. Not surprisingly, the study found that culinary travellers also like good wine. On average, food- and- wine travellers spend US$1,194 per trip, with about US$425 of their travel budget going towards food-related activities.
