European Parliament’s discussions on aviation taxation to offset environmental impact lack forward planning and balance
London – 13 July, 2006 – Last week’s European Parliament discussions on the impact of aviation on climate change, drew various conclusions which, in WTTC’s view, did not take in the larger picture of the challenges which need to be managed. American Airlines adds fee to tickets bought through some agentsAmerican Airlines has told travel agents it will start charging a fee of $3.50 per ticket for tickets purchased through distributors that do not have a contract with the carrier. Israël Bombs Beirut's Airport
The international airport of Beirut is closed down after the continuous bombings of Israeli army. In the Israeli assaults to Lebanon 27 people were killed among them ten were children.
Austrian Suspends Flights To Beirut
Due to the current situation in Lebanon, the Austrian Airlines Group suspends until further notice scheduled flights to Beirut. Passengers with Austrian-tickets to Beirut may rebook free of charge until July 31, 2006 to a later date within validity of ticket.
KLM Appointments
AMSTELVEEN, July 13, 2006 - KLM's Executive Vice President Inflight Services, Mr. J.H. (Jan) Meurer, will retire effective September 12, 2006.
Mr. E.F. (Erik) Varwijk, currently Senior Vice President KLM Benelux, will succeed Mr. Meurer as EVP Inflight Services with effect from that same date.
Mr. A.A. (Bram) Gräber, currently Senior Vice President Marketing & Network at Air France - KLM Cargo, will take over the position of SVP KLM Benelux.
In anticipation of these changes, Mr. Varwijk's responsibility for passenger sales within Western Europe, not including the Benelux region, was recently integrated into the position of Senior Vice President Europe & North Africa, held by Mr. M.H. (Marnix) Fruitema.
Mr. Gräber's successor at Air France - KLM Cargo will be announced at a later date.

Les E-Jets d'Embraer ont été choisis par Mandarin Airlines de Taiwan pour les futurs achats d'appareils de flotte
SAO JOSE DOS CAMPOS, Brésil -- Embraer a annoncé que Mandarin Airlines avait choisi les E-Jets EMBRAER 190 et EMBRAER 195 en tant qu'appareils principaux pour ses futurs approvisionnements. Mandarin a décidé de faire initialement l'acquisition d'une flotte de huit appareils en crédit-bail et a signé un contrat avec GE Commercial Aviation Services (GECAS) pour trois EMBRAER 190 et cinq EMBRAER 195 selon le même type de financement. Ces derniers proviendront du carnet de commandes de GECAS.

Air Berlin sees record passengers numbers in June
Air Berlin's passenger numbers and load factor continued to grow. In June 2006, 1,502,509 passengers flew with Air Berlin, a 14.92 percent increase on the same month the previous year (1,307,494 passengers).

Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group Acquires Thrifty Franchise Operation In Pensacola

Caribbean Hotels Profitable in 2005: Region Attracts New Development
ATLANTA, July 11-- In its first-ever report on the Caribbean hotel industry, PKF Hospitality Research finds that Caribbean hotels continue to be profitable for owners and operators due to increasing rates of travel to the region spurred by a strong U.S. economy. In 2005, Caribbean hotels averaged $111,414 per available room (PAR) and $25,541 PAR in profits. The net result was a 22.9 percent profit margin. These observations come from the recently released 2006 edition of Caribbean Trends in the Hotel Industry published by PKF Hospitality Research (PKF-HR), an affiliate of PKF Consulting. Read more.

Le High Line, un parc suspendu dans le quartier branché de Meatpacking

Bloomberg et l’association des amis de la High Line ont donné le coup d’envoi des travaux qui transformeront une ancienne ligne de chemin de fer suspendue en un superbe jardin – une reconversion qui n’est pas sans rappeler celle du Viaduc des Arts à Paris. Cette ligne, ou tout au moins ce qu’il en reste (2,5 km), longe l’Hudson River entre Gansevoort Street et West 20th Street. Inauguration prévue en septembre 2008.

Hyatt International Signs Agreement to Manage the New 300-room Hyatt Regency Yekaterinburg, Russia
Lausanne, Switzerland -- Hyatt International (EAME) LLC and LLC “Verh-Isetskaya Investment Construction Company” have announced that definitive agreements have been signed for Hyatt to operate the new 300-room Hyatt Regency Yekaterinburg. Construction has already begun and is being carried out by Bouygues Bâtiment International LLC. Good Year for Maritim Hotelgesellschaft

Maritim Hotelgesellschaft, the second largest German hotel chain, increased its results again in 2005. With 337.3 million Euros the overall turnover was nearly eight million Euros higher than in 2004. At the same time the gross operational product (GOP) was increased to nearly 115 million Euros and lay at 34 percent. Thus, Maritim once again demonstrated its reliable profit position. With 44 hotels in 2005 - eight of them abroad - the occupancy rate of Maritim controlled hotels lay at 55.8 percent. The average room rate increased to 78.35 Euros. Read more.

Tourism Economics : Shifts In US Outbound
By any account, the US outbound market is substantial. Some 62 million US travellers spent US$70 billion in destinations around the world in 2005.
This market has experienced dramatic shifts over the past five years. Although the US traveller has ventured out in large numbers again after declines early in the millennium, the market's composition has changed and more changes are yet to come. New travel policies, a slowing (but strong) economy, and the expansion of important destinations will all drive continued change in the market.
The question remains for both recent and pending shifts: Are these changes temporary or do they represent a paradigm shift for US outbound travel

The United Kingdom's Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has launched several helpful initiatives following a major policy review in 2003. Most recently, the FCO has launched Support for British Nationals Abroad: a Guide to help UK travellers have safe and responsible trips. The handbook outlines what the Foreign Office can and cannot do to help British citizens if they find themselves in trouble abroad. The guide is free and available online at www.fco.gov.uk/travel.
