Asked to comment on the latest quarterly figures issued by the Austrian Airlines Group, Chief Executive Officer Alfred Ötsch made the following statement: 'We managed to achieve above-average traffic growth in the first quarter of 2007, above all in the short- and medium-haul segment, and remain firmly in the ascendant where measured by all of the key parameters, such as passenger volume, load factor and the traffic result. With the reorientation of our long-haul segment currently underway and the simultaneous expansion in the Focus East areas, with new routes being incorporated into the network and increases in frequency in our core markets, this year's summer schedule is set to make a very positive impact.'
By posting a double-digit rise in passenger volume of 12.3%, the Austrian Airlines Group reported above-average rates of growth in the short- and medium-haul segment compared to the previous year. Compared to 2006, revenue passenger kilometers (RPK) on these scheduled services increased by a substantial 16.9%, while available seat kilometers (ASK) increased by 11.8%. The resultant passenger load factor of 66.6% was 2.9 percentage points higher than last year.

Middle East airport development in focus
The ten leading Middle East airports are investing US$23.5 billion in new airport capacity by 2012 that will provide capacity for 318 million passengers per annum, up 292% on current levels, and taking total annual airport capacity to 399 million. However, this expansion is occurring in areas of close proximity, which increases the risks of overlapping catchment areas and cannibalisation of demand. On the other hand, the planned capacity of the region will likely fall short of traffic growth, even if it meets its expected average growth rate of 7% per annum. Read more.

Unified State Policies Needed To Develop Bulgaria's Tourism
To develop, tourism in Bulgaria needed state policies, head of the Bulgarian Association of Travel Agents (BATA) Donka Sokolova said.
Sokolova took part in a roundtable discussion on the problems that Bulgarias tourism sector faces.
Cabinet needed to focus on three main development areas. These include the promotion of cultural and historic tourism, emphasis on folklore and on traditions.
Bulgarian Tourism Industry Union (BTIU) representative Petya Slavova said that new tourism laws were needed.
Laws should put new emphasis on cultural monuments and should envision changes in tourism VAT, Slavova said as quoted by Focus news agency. Current VAT regulations stimulated the appearance of grey economy and shady practices within the tourism sector.
Representatives of various tourism organisations said that over-construction and the destruction of Bulgarias nature featured among the main obstacles to the development of the sector.

The Long Slick Road
Long before Europeans arrived in North America, First Nation peoples from the coast traded with those from the interior, forging a network of trails. |
Their main trading commodity was grease made from smelt, properly known as oolican, a sardine like fish. Rich in fat, the First Nations people rendered the grease to create a high energy food similar to butter: thus, the trading trails became known as 'grease trails'.
In 1772 Alexander Mackenzie set off in search of an overland route from Quebec to the Pacific Ocean. Guided by members of First Nation Bands, he and his party followed an ancient grease trail from the mouth of the Blackwater River into the Bella Coola Valley.
Avid Hikers can hike the entire 450km (280 mile) Alexander Mackenzie Heritage Trail or choose to explore short sections of the historical trail. And if by foot seems a bit too much you can do choose to do parts of the route on horseback (local outfitters offer guided pack trips).

Wild at Heart
Tucked in the Nemiah Valley in the heart of British Columbia's Chilcotin region is the Brittany Triangle where over 383,000 lonely acres of wilderness is home to herds of wild horses. Believed to be descendants of Spanish mustangs, the handsome horses feed in sprawling grass and sedge meadows and are watched by a mix of groups, including conservationists and biologists, and more recently by Canada's only Wild Horse Patrol Ranger. Visitors can catch a glimpse of these free running horses whilst staying at the Elkin Creek Guest Ranch, where guests are taken out on horseback in search of the wild horses. Elkin Creek offers all inclusive three, four and seven day packages starting at $695 per person in the spring and fall (ex. flights and transfers to and from the resort), or $795 in the peak summer season. And from May 17 - 20 this year the ranch will host its annual Cattle Drive. Guests of all ages and abilities are invited to take part in this authentic cowboy and cowgirl tradition that involves moving cows to greener pastures.

Californian downturn
Despite the weakening of the dollar against the world's major currencies, latest available figures (the first eight months of 2006) show that international arrivals in California declined from many of the state's major source markets. Europe has been performing particularly disappointingly, with the UK - California's second-largest source - down 8% (292,400 visits January-August). In the same period Germany declined by 10% (117,900 visits) and France by 17% (87,600). There were also declines from Switzerland, Ireland, Italy, Austria and Netherlands.
Encouraging, however, is growth from Australia, which moved into third place in the visitor rankings in 2005, overtaking Germany, and in the first eight months of 2006 increased by 6% to 242,700 visits. Also important for California is growth from the China market, up 7% to 88,000 visits in the first eight months of 2006. But California's largest market, Japan, declined by 5% in the same eight-month period (381,400 visits). Taiwan and South Korea stagnated, and Hong Kong declined by 2%.
