A new airport for Ouagadougou

The government of Burkina Faso has plans to build an entirely new airport for the capital, Ouagadougou, to replace its existing airport that is unsuitable for future expansion. The project will cost €360 million and construction will start this year, with completion of phase one targeted for 2011.

The current airport has capacity for just 250,000 passengers a year, and has been operating at full capacity since 2004. It has the added disadvantage of being located in a densely populated urban area, 3 kilometres from the city. The new airport, says the county's transport minister, will be located in Donsin, some 35 kilometres northeast of the capital, and the new terminal will be able to handle up to 1.5 million passengers annually. The cost for this first phase is estimated at €175 million. Further phases will be added up until 2023, says the transport minister, although he does not specify how the government will finance this ambitious infrastructure project.

Plans have also been announced to revive several railway lines connecting Burkino Faso with its neighbours. Currently the landlocked country (which borders on Mali, Ghana and the Ivory Coast) is only connected by rail to the port city of Abidjan, and this has been largely closed in recent years due to conflict in the Ivory Coast.
