Sex Tourism Involving Underage Youth Flourishing In Bulgaria And Romania - DW

Sex tourism involving underage youth in Black Sea coastal resorts endangered the image of Bulgaria and Romania as tourism destinations, ECPAT organisation against child prostitution representative Astrid Winkler said.

Bulgaria and Romania had to take measures because sex tourism could have negative effect already seen in other countries which neglected it, Winkler said as quoted by Deutsche Welle (DW) Radio.

Thailand was an example of a country that fights sex tourism but fails to defeat the negative image already gained. Experts said that the situation in the Black Sea region will become similar.

Bulgaria lacks official statistics for the number of children ‘working’ at its coast. Children became victims of sexual exploitation at the age of 13 or 14. Some of them were of Roma origin, others were victims of human trafficking, DW said.

Winkler said that the organisation received weak support from Bulgaria’s government.

The resolution of the problem depended on the countries where it existed, but also on the countries where the sex tourists came from, Winkler said.

Visits to Latvia and Lithuania still growing, but Estonia sees a downturn

Preliminary figures for the three Baltic States indicate that Latvia performed the best of the three in 2006 with international visits to the country increasing by 23%. This is largely a result of more low-cost access which, in turn, has led to the destination gaining a higher profile in West European markets, says Latvian Tourism. Latvia's 2006 results are an improvement on the previous two years - international arrivals grew by 11% in 2004 over 2003, and by just 3% in 2005 to a total of 1.1million, according to UNWTO figures.

Winter in Noorwegen

Grensoverschrijdende skipas in Trysil

USA says that 2007 will finally break all inbound tourism records

The US Department of Commerce (DOC) estimates that arrivals in the USA reached 50.9 million in 2006, an increase of 3% over 2005. However, the total was below the 51.2 million forecast earlier in 2006 and means that US inbound arrivals have still not returned to their 2000 peak. Moreover, the growth has not been commensurate with GDP growth and the favourable exchange rates in many major markets. Some states in the USA were clearly affected more than others, with Florida reportedly suffering a 13% decline in arrivals from abroad in the first half of the year.

Florida tourism up in 2006

The number of tourists visiting Florida increased last year by 1.2%, to 84.6 million, according to Visit Florida. But while the numbers as a whole were up in 2006, statistics show that tourism declined sharply during the third quarter.

“Though we are encouraged by the recent release in visitation, the tourism market in Florida is currently quite unstable,” said Donna Ross, chairwoman of the Visit Florida board of directors and CEO of the Florida Attractions Association.

Tourism is considered Florida's number one industry, generating revenue that funds roads, schools and other statewide programmes.

Morocco set to replace Tunisia as North Africa's top destination

A series of initiatives are underway to boost Morocco's visitor count to 7 million this year, so that it will probably overtake Tunisia as the leading destination in North Africa. First results for 2006 indicate that tourism revenues in Morocco totalled US$6.24 billion, up by an impressive 17.4% over 2005. UNWTO figures for visitor arrivals in Morocco for the first 11 months of 2006 show a 9.3% increase over the same period in 2005. Read more.

Bali stages a come-back

Bali's tourism sector fared better than expected in 2006. According to preliminary figures, foreign visitor arrivals for the year were down by 9.1% to 1.26 million, but in November and December, visitors grew by 81.6% and 61.9% respectively. Increasing numbers of European and North American visitors have not only offset losses from Australia and Japan, Bali's two major source markets, but have helped diversify Bali's visitor mix, creating a more healthy balance.
