JAL Offers Round-the-World Global Explorer Fares
Tokyo, Monday March 27, 2006: Japan Airlines (JAL) starts selling round-the-world Global Explorer fares for travel commencing April 1, 2006. Air Wales has announced it will cease scheduled services from April 23 with the loss of around 80 jobs.

Jet Airways announces the introduction of a second daily flight on the Mumbai-London-Mumbai sectors, starting July 10, 2006. It will operate these flights with the state-of-the-art Airbus 340-300E aircraft.
Continental Airlines Opens New European Call Center In Brussels
BRUSSELS, March 24, 2006 - Continental Airlines officially opened its new European Call Center yesterday. The center, which is located in the airline's new offices in Diegem, near Brussels' Zaventem Airport, handles phone reservations for 11 countries: Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
The call center's 54 staff, including three managers and two supervisors, come from all over Europe and together they speak nine different languages. Read more.

Air Berlin Launches Flights From Belfast
BERLIN, Germany, March 16 -- Air Berlin, Europe's third-largest low-cost airline, continued its European expansion by announcing today it will start flying from Belfast City Airport to seven destinations in Europe via its hub in London-Stansted. Etihad Airways To Launch Flights To Paris And Dhaka
ABU DHABI - Abu Dhabi-based carrier Etihad Airways is planning to begin services to the new international destinations of Paris and Dhaka. From June 1 the carrier will start six weekly flights to Paris. From May 3 the airline will begin four weekly flights to Dhaka, rising to five weekly from June 5.
Korean Air Receives In-Flight Meal Award
SEOUL - Korean Air has won the Mercury Award from the International Flight Catering Association for the development and service of Bibim Noodles (Spicy Korean Noodles) as an in-flight meal. The airline was awarded the Gold Prize in the Food and Beverage category. Korean Air offers the Bibim Noodle service on Korea-East Coast US flights (New York, Chicago, Washington, Atlanta), to soon be expanded to Europe and Oceania flights. Meanwhile, the carrier has announced it is enhancing its service between Los Angeles and Asia with an upgraded First Class and business class. From April, Korean Air will add three flights per week between Los Angeles and Seoul-Incheon for 24 weekly flights.
Eva Air Rewards Frequent Flyers With Awards
TAIPEI - Taiwan carrier EVA Air is offering its Evergreen Club frequent flyers a "Check-in for a Chance of a Million" program. From March 16-June 15, Evergreen Club members who book, buy and fly in the airline's Super First, Super Business and Premium Laurel Classes will be automatically entered in an electronic lottery to win one million award points. A winner will be chosen each month, with a total of three to be selected. The one million points will be awarded on the 20th of April, May and June to passengers who have traveled during each of the designated 30-day periods. Winners can redeem their special awards for EVA tickets and Evergreen Club Award Cheques that can be exchanged for upgrades and stays at Evergreen Laurel Hotels.
Cathay Pacific to Launch New Flights In April
HONG KONG - From April Hong-Kong based carrier Cathay Pacific will operate three non-stop flights per week to the Malaysian destination of Penang. Four more weekly services will operate to Indonesia's Denpasar and two more to the Philippines' Cebu during peak season. From June another two weekly flights will operate to the Australian destination of Adelaide. An additional three weekly services will fly to Paris and Frankfurt, taking both to 10 services a week.

Asia sweeps the board in Airport Service Excellence awards
South Korea's Incheon International Airport has been named Best Airport Worldwide according to the AETRA passenger survey programme that was jointly administered by Airports Council International (ACI) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in 2005. Second place honours were awarded to Hong Kong International and Singapore's Changi, with Kuala Lumpur International ranked third - a remarkable performance for Asia Pacific airports. Read more.
Extra long-range Boeing 737 will boost tourism to secondary cities in Japan: Boeing is planning to develop for the Japanese carrier All Nippon Airways a new extra-long range version of the Boeing 737-700. The aircraft, which has a capacity of 126 passengers, will be able to fly non-stop from Brussels to Tokyo or from Brussels to San Francisco. It will also mean that many secondary markets will enjoy non-stop flights to long-haul destinations. The first aircraft will enter service by 2007.
Thailand's regional carrier Bangkok Airways wants to launch intercontinental flights. Late last year, the airline ordered six brand new Airbus A350-800 due for delivery in 2012 and 2013. The airline plans flights to Europe with onwards connections from Bangkok to its regional network.
Bangkok's new Suvharnabumi Airport will definitely open this year, even if no precise date has been given by the Airports Authority of Thailand (AOT). The air terminal will be the largest in the world and able to accommodate in its first phase up to 45 million passengers. Two parallel runways will also be able to handle any type of aircraft. A rail link will be completed in 2007, putting the airport at only 15 minutes from the city. The AOT is already working on a second phase, which will include a third runway and a satellite building for an additional 15 million passengers.
Nice-Côte d'Azur, France's second largest airport after Paris, handled 9.7 million passengers in 2005. The strong growth of low-cost services boosted international traffic, which represented 57% of passengers handled - a growth of five percentage points compared with 2004. Ten years ago, international traffic comprised a market share of just 37%. New flights to Mauritius and Atlanta should further contribute to strengthening international traffic during 2006.
German airlines DBA and LTU have moved closer, becoming one of the largest low-cost airlines group in Continental Europe. The move comes after one of the DBA airline owners has acquired a 60% stake in LTU. The airlines do not plan a full merger, but will co-operate in terms of network planning and marketing.
Germanwings increases market share
The low-cost airline Germanwings carried 5.5 million passengers in 2005, a massive 57% increase over 2004. and has now become market leader in Cologne with a 35% share and ranks second in Berlin Schönefeld with a 17% share. In Stuttgart the airline has a 15% share, and, according to Dr Joachim Klein, member of Germanwings board of directors, it should increase share to 18% this year to become market leader in Stuttgart as well. Zurich Tourism joins the fight against proposed airport restrictions
The ongoing battle to limit the number of flights into the major Swiss city of Zurich has taken a new turn, with city's office of tourism stepping in to defend the airport. Zurich Tourism has taken a strong position against the people's referendum 'for a realistic airport's policy', which would like to limit the number of air movements at 250,000 per year and extend the night curfew to nine hours. The ports of Cannes and Nice on the French Riviera both registered a healthy 10% growth in cruise activities last year: in total they attracted 495,000 cruise passengers. By contrast, ferry passenger traffic to Corsica from Nice declined by 4% to 722,000 passengers as a result of strikes by the French ferry company SNCM.

More hotels for Malaysia's Borneo
The East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, both located on Borneo Island, are looking to improve accommodation capacity. Between them they attract over 5 million visitors a year, of whom 25-30% come from abroad. Read more.
The well-known Orchard Road in Singapore will be revamped over the next two years and turned into the equivalent of the Champs Elysées for Southeast Asia. A Development Commission has been set up by the government. It will work with the public and private sectors to attract new flagship stores, as well as to beautify the urban landscape around the road. Some S$1.6 billion will be invested in the programme. According to surveys by the Singapore Tourism Board, 76% of all visitors to Singapore visit Orchard Road, which accounts for 15% of all shopping expenditure by tourists.
The recent hosting of the Asean Travel Forum in Davao (Mindanao, Philippines) provided a good opportunity to highlight the Philippines' second largest city to the world's travel and tourism community. Four- and five-star hotels like the Marco Polo in the city centre, the Waterfront Insular Hotel and the Pearl Farm Resort Hotel, have been completely renovated and a new handicrafts market created for tourists. Davao airport's passenger terminal was expanded 18 months ago. In total, the city received over 550,000 visitors.
Vietnam is launching Visit Year Qang Nam, a central province which includes the city of Hoi An and the sanctuaries of My Son, both on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Festivals and seminars on tourism will be organised during the year. Hoi An is rapidly becoming a major tourist attraction in the country thanks to its well-preserved XVIIth century structure. The city has 80 hotels including 9 four and five-star hotels with 1,150 rooms.
One of the newest countries in the world, Timor Leste has big hopes that tourism will help to alleviate poverty in the country. Timor Leste recently became a member of the UNWTO, which has already sent experts to evaluate the country's tourism needs and develop a future marketing strategy for the destination. The budget for tourism promotion remains very small (US$49,000) and is dependent on the generosity of donors. So far, we have the support of Macau, Portugal and Thailand, says Miguel de Moraes Sarmento, tourist advisor for Timor Leste's Ministry of Tourism. The most urgent task for tourism officials is to create an image for the destination. We have a superb destination with incredible landscapes, a friendly and welcoming population, Moraes Sarmento adds.
Bali shows resilience despite October bombing
Bali is by far Indonesia's most important tourism destination. In 2004, it accounted for 1.5 million (29%) of Indonesia's 5.3 million inbound visitor arrivals - 50% more than the capital, Jakarta. And if only guests in commercial accommodation are considered, Bali's share of foreign tourism was even greater, at 43%. Read more.
Cambodia's spectacular tourism growth
For the last three years, Cambodian tourism has been growing at a rapid rate. After recording for the first time in its history 1 million international visitors in 2004, growth gained momentum last year with a jump of 27.4% to 1.35 million international visitors. Since 2001, tourism to Cambodia increased by 123%, one of the best results of all countries within Southeast Asia. Projections by the Ministry of tourism point to 1.5 to 1.6 million international visitors this year and the 2 million mark should reached by 2007. Read more.
More than 1.9 million tourists arrived in Israel in 2005 - which was a 27% increase over the previous year. There were increases from most regions - Asia increased 26%, Europe 29%, and the Americas up 24%. TravelDaily News quoted the country's minister of tourism speaking here in Berlin as expecting even faster growth this year. It wants to reach 3 million tourists for 2006, which would represent a growth of over 50%.
Senegal has high hopes for future growth after hosting the UNWTO General Assembly in 2005
Senegal's hosting of the World Tourism Organization's General Assembly in December was seen as a major boost for the country's image. It was the first time ever that such a prestigious international event was organised in sub-Saharan Africa. Over the years, Senegal positioned itself as the natural gateway to Western French-speaking Africa, taking over from an Ivory Coast entrapped into political turmoil. Read more.
Stellar performance from Africa
Africa is the only region in the world to have performed much better in 2005 than in 2004, according to preliminary data gathered by UNWTO. And this was very largely due to stellar performances from two key tourism destinations in Sub-Saharan Africa - Kenya (up 26% through the month of October) and South Africa (+11% through August). Although full-year estimates are not available, current trends suggest that growth would remain stable through the last few months of the year. Read more.
California has a tourism budget again
Although his popularity might be at an all-time low in California and in Austria, California's governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will probably be remembered by the travel industry as the one who reinstated a marketing budget for tourism. In the middle of last year the governor turned a 2005-2006 fiscal year budget bill into law, restoring the US$ 7.3 million in public tourism marketing funds for the California Travel and Tourism Commission (CTTC). New discoveries boost Peru's cultural tourism
A discovery by British, American and Peruvian explorers has led to an exciting new tourism site. The explorers joined forces in an adventure that has led to the discovery of a pre-Colombian citadel in the district of Santa Teresa, in the Peruvian province of Convención, near Cuzco. The archaeological complex has been dubbed Corihuayrachina ('gold melted by the wind'), a site the explorers believe was one of the final strongholds of the Inca rebels who sought refuge in the Vilcabamba jungle region. Seattle and its region back to 2000 levels
According to the latest data released by the Seattle Convention and Visitors Bureau, the King County - which includes Seattle and surroundings - was almost regained 2000 levels in 2004. The region recorded some 8.73 million overnight visitors- an increase of 2.7% over 2003. In 2000, overnight visitors reached an all-time high of 8.8 million but declined to 8.45 million in 2002. Bustling New York continues to attract more visitors each year. According to first figures released for 2005, the Big Apple received some 41 million visitors including 6.7 million international visitors. For 2006, the city administration predicts an all-time record of 43.3 million. Read more.
TourismTriRhena.com is the new alliance formed by the offices of tourism of Basel and Basel Land, Colmar, Mulhouse as well as the Euroairport Basel-Mulhouse and the office of tourism economics and trade of Freiburg. The aim is to develop joint initiatives to promote tourism in the Regio TriRhena, the tri-national cultural and economic area in the Upper Rhine Valley formed by the regions of Alsace, North-West Switzerland and the southern Black Forest. The project is co-financed by the European Union and the Swiss Confederation.
Slovakia attracted 29.4 million international visitors in 2005, a growth of 11.3% over 2004. Revenues from tourism reached almost EUR1 billion, which represented a 29% increase over 2004. Some 94% of all tourism revenue comes from individual travellers according to Slovakia's Ministry of Tourism.
Hungary received 6.5 million visitors who stayed in commercial accommodation from January to November, 2005, a growth of 4.7% over the same period of 2004. Hotels represented the largest share with 4.6 million guests, a growth of 8.7%. Total overnights reached 18.4 million, up 2.2%.
Paris recorded 28.5 million overnights for the first ten months of 2005, a growth of 7.5% compared to the equivalent period of 2004. Foreign overnights progressed by 10.5% to reach 19.4 million overnights as the demand from the domestic market remained stable at 9.1 million overnights (+1.5%). Among foreign overnights, the strongest growth rates were recorded from the Asia/Pacific area with 31.1% growth, followed by the Middle East (+22.5%), the USA (+21.1%) and Spain (+19.1%). The length of stay increased during the same period by 5% to reach 2.2 overnights
Tourism in Geneva had an excellent 2005 with a 12.2% growth in international arrivals recorded in the first 11 months of the year. During that period, the Swiss city registered 1.01 million international arrivals. The UK is Geneva's leading market, thanks to the strong growth in low-cost flights. Between January and November, UK visitor figures grew 15.9% to 126,000 tourist arrivals; France followed with 101,000 arrivals, up 10.2% over the same period in 2004, and the USA was third with 84,400 arrivals,(+6.1%). Geneva's most dynamic source market in 2005 was China, increasing by 65.3% to 10,227 arrivals. Visitors from Ireland also showed a growing interest in Geneva, up 41% to 5,800 arrivals. By contrast, the Swiss city of Basel had a mediocre 2005: total overnight visitors to the city were down by 3.7% to 384,000. However, international arrivals performed slightly better, declining by a smaller 1.2% to 256,000.
Croatia almost reached the magic 10 million tourist arrivals mark last year. Arrivals from most European markets recorded double-digit growth, with Estonia +97%, Norway +79%, France +50%, Spain +49% and Sweden +45%. However, Germany remains the largest source market for Croatia with 15.7 million arrivals, a market share of 18.6%. Italy, Austria and Slovenia are the other most important sources. This year Croatia will continue to promote marine tourism; with 1,185 islands, 6,000 kilometres of coastline along the Adriatic, and 49 marinas with 14,300 berths, the country is a paradise for boat lovers. Two new marinas offering 500 berths will be finished before the summer season gets underway.
Vienna recorded a growth in overnights and arrivals for the first eight months of 2005. The total number of arrivals grew by 1.9% to 2.36 million. Among the ten top markets, Italy recorded the strongest decline, with -6.3%, followed by France with -3.2%. However, tourist arrivals from Japan grew by 10%, by Spain by 7.5%, the CIS by 7.2% and the USA continued its recovery with an increase of 4.7%. Total overnights grew by 2.6% reaching 5.69 million during the same period. In 2004, Vienna's most visited monuments for sightseeing were Schönbrunn Castle with 2.2 million visitors, followed by the Schönbrunn Zoo (1.75 million) and the Albertina arts collection (0.75 million).
Essen and the Ruhr region want to become the European Capital of Culture 2010. The bidding organisation, the Regional Association of the Ruhr, hopes that getting the event would not only enhance the image of the region better known for its steel and coal industry, but would also help to develop a sense of unified identity to the 53 Ruhr cities. The region has already been able to develop a new economy based on culture by converting old factories and industrial sites into exciting museums and venues. The event would further help the Ruhr to achieve the status of a new European cultural landscape
Berlin looks far beyond soccer
Berlin achieved a new record last year with 6.5 million visitors, up 9.1% over 2004, generating 14.6 million overnights (+10.3%). For the first time ever, the German capital also recorded close to 2 million international arrivals, a growth of 18.9%. Business and cultural boost for Lyon
A series of new developments will improve the infrastructure in the Rhone city of Lyon, an important business destination. A new business venue, a 3000-seat amphitheatre, will soon be completed, and two new exhibition facilities at Eurexpo are also under construction. Five themes reveal Northern Ireland's unique qualities
The Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB) has identified five key 'signature' projects to highlight the unique qualities - past, present and future - of this undervisited part of the island of Ireland. Most ambitious of these is a massive project to create a 'Titantic Quarter' at the Belfast shipyards where the cruise liner was originally built in 1912. The multi-million pound development by Harcourt Developments (the landowners) was launched in October 2005, and will include an exhibition centre, museums, hotels, a marina, and entertainment parks - all part of a regeneration scheme for Belfast's dockland area, and due to be ready for the Titanic's 100th anniversary in six year's time. Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts Moves to Makkah: A New Hotel in the Holy City to Open in 2007
In keeping with its expansion objectives across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and following the successful operation of two hotels in Madinah and two in Jeddah, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts (MH&R) now moves to Makkah: A management contract for a new hotel has just been signed with the Kuwait based owner Hajar Real Estate Company K.S.C.C. ORLANDO (March 17, 2006) Hospitality Development Group Inc. (HDG) of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida has announced plans to develop Palazzo del Lago, an $800 million, luxury destination resort in Central Florida (USA). Palazzo del Lago will include the InterContinental Resort & Residences Orlando, the largest InterContinental hotel worldwide, with a mix of 1,260 luxury hotel and hotel condominium units. The resort is an official hotel of the Orange County Convention Center.
The resort will also include The Villas at Palazzo del Lago, a 994-unit resort residential condominium development comprised of five separate towers of 18 stories each, each with its own set of amenities, including a swimming pool, fitness center and Smart technology.

HMS International Hotel GmbH, an associated partner of Maritim, has just signed the management contract for a new 4-star-plus hotel in Estepona on the Costa del Sol in Spain. Maritim pleases Non-Smokers
Bad Salzuflen -- With immediate effect, Maritim Hotels in Germany have reduced smoking in all their hotel restaurants. During breakfast, all restaurants of the hotel chain are now complete non-smoking areas. Those who cannot do without their usual cigarette in the morning may sit down in the lobby over a free coffee. At noon and in the evening fresh air is also guaranteed for all who are bothered by cigarette smoke - at lunch and dinner 50 percent of all Maritim restaurants are reserved for non-smokers. This arrangement becomes a rule in all 36 German Maritim hotels.
One year ago, Accor Asia Pacific's X Base Backpackers (XBB) youth-hostel operation had six properties open in Australasia and 25 projects - including three in Asia. That has now changed to eight open and six projects - all in Australasia. However, XBB is still looking for projects in Asia - particularly Bangkok, Hong Kong and Singapore. It says it will have something in those three centres in two years if it has to build - but sooner if there are properties that need only conversion
Dublin environs gets new upmarket capacity this year, with a further 167 new rooms opening this Spring at Dublin's Citywest Hotel Conference, Leisure and Golf Resort, to make a total of 1,315 suites and self-contained units. The venue, with two golf courses, 380 acres of parkland, health and leisure facilities and several restaurants, is making an important contribution to Ireland's growing meetings and incentive sector.
Hotels in Holland turned the corner last year with occupancy rates increasing from 66.7% to 69.1%, according to a research done by Horwath Consulting. In Amsterdam, occupancy reached 76.6%. Hoteliers remain optimistic about 2006 with occupancy increasing again to 70% for the whole country, a level seen last in 2002. Average room rate in Holland for 2005 remained flat at EUR98 but it should grow by 10% this year. Amsterdam's room rate decreased slightly in 2005 over 2004 from EUR114 to EUR113.

Hotels in Rome had mixed results in 2005 - occupancy increased nearly five points, but average room rate was down slightly by 1%. Together, however, this meant that hoteliers' main performance measure, revpar - revenue per available room - increased by nearly 8%. The figures show 72% occupancy, EUR199 average room rate, and EUR144 revpar.
Châteaux et Hôtels de France, France's largest chain of traditional inns, hotels and converted manors with 538 members, has introduced a new classification system with six different categories. Marks replace previous colours and symbols. 'Orus' symbolises exceptional or remarkable properties and stands alongside 'Caractères', 'Les Beaux Hôtels', 'La Compagnie des Auberges', ' Les Demeures Privées' and 'Les Restaurants'. A new spa label has been also created which already includes 26 members. In 2005 'Châteaux et Hôtels de France' turnover increased by 40% to EUR7 million.
US giant franchisor, Choice, targets Europe
The US hotel franchise group, Choice, says it will continue its push into Europe, after adding new properties in 2005 across all four of its brands to bring its current European total count to 346 hotels. Choice has only been operating in the European hotel franchise market since 1997, and development strategy now is to fill the gaps so that all major conurbations are covered. It has set aside EUR41 million to renovate some of its existing properties. Choice's current European portfolio is made up of 189 Comfort hotels (the premium budget brand), 7 Sleep Inns (all new-builds, premium limited service) 129 Quality (mid market) and 24 Clarions (business-lifestyle in key locations). Futuroscope moves into profit
After operating at a loss for the past seven years, French theme park Futuroscope near Poitiers hopes to make its first profit in 2006. Last year the park attracted 1.4 million visitors, a growth of 6% over 2004, with a turnover of €59 million, up by 10%. After a loss of €10 million in 2004, there was a marked improvement in 2005, with the loss amounting to just €2 million. Read more.

In 2006 viert Thalys zijn 10de verjaardag.
Tot op heden reisden al meer dan 50 miljoen mensen tussen Parijs, Brussel, Amsterdam en Keulen. Dankzij Thalys is het zelfs mogelijk zonder papieren ticket te reizen met de Ticketless service.
In 2008 verbindt Thalys Brussel met Amsterdam en Brussel met Keulen in 1u30.

Priceline Europe, one of Europe's online hotel reservations companies, announced it will open three new offices in Rome, Vienna and Dublin this month. The new offices will be staffed with local sales and account management teams to ensure a closer relationship with suppliers and partners in each territory. Priceline Europe currently operates from eight offices based in Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Cambridge, London, Paris and Pisa. In addition the company has recently acquired larger premises in Paris to accommodate its growing team.
Travelocity's revenue up 65% to US$830 million
Total revenues at Travelocity rose by 65% in 2005 from US$503 million to US$830 million. This was based on gross travel bookings of US$7.4 billion, up 51% year on year. Read more.
