Louisiana Needs Everyone
02 Sep 05
Louisiana, USA - Many around the nation and globe have reached out and want to know how they can help. Obviously, our first priority is to the safety and health of our fellow Louisianians, and to that end we encourage donations of money and supplies to the American Red Cross who is taking the lead in providing relief.
Once the safety of our citizens is ensured, all of our efforts will be focused on rebuilding our great state. We will need everyones help to keep the economic engine running by keeping businesses, conventions, groups, etc. in Louisiana.
Each part of the state, not physically affected by Hurricane Katrina, is going to stand strong and be partners with south Louisiana when the time comes to focus on rebuilding, and our areas need to continue to be economically strong to do so. That means that we need businesses, conventions, and groups to embrace the resiliency and spirit of our great state. There are organizations around the state to help marshal the full resources necessary for this effort.
The effects of a catastrophe of this magnitude are already resonating around the state. New Orleans contributes a significant portion to the states economy and tourism industry. Tourism produces $9 billion in economic activity every year in Louisiana, making it the second biggest sector of our state's economy. (Health care is the largest sector.) 2004 traveler expenditures in Orleans Parish, in which New Orleans is located, reached nearly $4.4 billion, accounting for 45.9 percent of the state total.
Now more than ever Louisiana needs to be, and is, open for business.
More than 204,000 convention and meeting delegates were scheduled to meet in New Orleans over the next two months. Thats an economic impact of roughly $44 million that the state desperately needs in this time of crisis.
