L’hôtel Stazione della posta situé dans le village de La Rösa (Vallée Poschiavo aux Grisons) a ouvert ses portes cet été. La particularité de cet hôtel, est sa philosophie qui s’oriente vers l’authenticité et le retour à la nature. L’hôtel se trouve dans un ancien bâtiment du 17e siècle où, à l’époque, les commerçants logeaient pendant que les chevaux de leurs chariots de postes étaient changés. Les chambres ont été refaites dans le style traditionnel et les matelas sont confectionnés avec du crin par Andrea Compagnoni âgée de 82 ans et une des seules Suissesses qui maîtrise encore le métier. On October 2 2010, Hotel Ritz Madrid will mark its Centenary as Madrid’s most iconic hotel, providing guests with a luxurious and elegant base from which to explore Spain’s vibrant capital city for ten decades. Madrileños love to celebrate and the Ritz Madrid is no exception, with a year-long schedule of events and parties planned.

As part of the Centenary offering, Hotel Ritz Madrid (www.ritzmadrid.com) has created a special accommodation package offering guests a rate of 100 Euros for the first night of their stay, when booking a minimum three night stay. The package is subject to availability, includes a daily buffet breakfast and will be available from October 1 2010 until September 2011 (excluding December 28 – January 1). Over the past 100 years, Hotel Ritz Madrid has been at the forefront of innovation in fine dining. To pay homage to his predecessors, executive chef Jorge Gonzales, will re-create a selection of dishes from the Goya Restaurant that reflect the evolution of cooking styles throughout the century. Iconic dishes, such as the Beef Tenderloin Centre Périgueux that was served for New Year’s Dinner on 1936, will take guests on a gastronomical journey from 1910 to the present day.

A legendary Shanghai pleasure palace dating back to the city’s ‘Pearl of the Orient’ heyday has been returned to its former glory by HBA/Hirsch Bedner Associates and re-opened as the Waldorf Astoria On The Bund.

The iconic English Renaissance-style landmark dating back to the Victorian era was once Shanghai’s most exclusive and prestigious social club with bowling alleys, restaurants, an oyster bar, games rooms, barber’s shop and two wine cellars. Its fabled Long Bar, extending 35 metres, was once the longest bar in the world.

“Restoring this forlorn property was a tremendous honour and true labor of love, the ultimate challenge of taking historical context and adding up-to-date convenience and style” said HBA Principal, Ian Carr.

The building on The Bund had over the years accommodated office space, a casino, motion picture sound stage and most recently a fast food restaurant. But it is now reborn, recapturing the spirit and romance of its bygone era while creating a new benchmark in luxury travel for Hilton Hotel Corporation’s first Waldorf Astoria in Asia.

One of the finest architectural gems along Shanghai’s waterfront promenade, the whitewashed façade is adorned with Palladium columns, intricate gables and a pair of sculpted rooftop cupolas.

The prestigious new hotel features a total of 266 rooms, four restaurants, two bars, a patisserie, lobby lounge, extensive banqueting facilities, swimming pool, health club and spa.

The Restoration
Throughout the painstakingly careful restoration, HBA designers were mindful of maintaining the highest degrees of period accuracy, requested by the Shanghai Cultural Relics Management Commission which oversees the city’s heritage buildings.

“That the Shanghai Club has its roots in the late Victorian era was never far from mind,” said Mr Carr, who was also co-lead designer. “Restoring or converting heritage property is the ultimate design challenge.”

Because of the Shanghai Club’s wide popularity, the photographic archive was fortunately immense, guiding restoration of nearly every element from its neo-classical interior and English colonial-inspired furniture to decorative lighting and antique Chinese accents and artifacts.

Connie Puar, HBA Principal and co-lead designer, said: “Restoration demands extreme attention to detail combined with flexibility. When we find a column where we did not expect it, we have to amend in a way that won’t compromise the design, which can be a challenge. Every item physically attached to the architecture—from ceiling molding and panels in walls, to the Sicilian marble columns and stained glass imported from England—is a restored or recreated heritage element.”

After removing decades of accrued material, HBA found the original interiors to be quite enduring. Paula O’Callaghan, Associate and senior FF&E designer, said: “A good amount of original surfaces like false moldings and drop ceilings were there, hidden underneath movie props. We also found the Shanghai Club’s fabled Long Bar painted in KFC’s palate.”

A New Era
The Waldorf Astoria Club also resurrects the Long Bar. At one time, patrons could gauge their relative social status by where they stood along it. A world-famous destination, the original Long Bar was lost during the Japanese occupation, but is now recreated from photographic records to original specifications, from dark timber paneling and white marble counter to rich, dark masculine furniture.

The most intentionally romantic space in the heritage building, The Grand Ballroom has achieved a level of refinement simply unimaginable in its early days, bathed in light by heritage-inspired crystal chandeliers while retaining its original warm, dark wood wainscoting, buff painted plaster walls and intricate ceiling and wall moldings. A remarkably scaled Oriental style rug covers the entire dining area.

HBA’s design team were called on to imagine a room that might have satisfied visiting royalty in 1911, and succeeded in making classical European style more romantic and refined than any original could have been, with oversized marble bathrooms, walk-in closets and dramatic fireplaces.

Décor is sumptuous with exquisite chandeliers, dark mahogany period furniture and Chinoise, antique reproductions.

“Ultimate design of the Waldorf Astoria Club delivers an unhurried feel of refined indulgence; as timeless today as it would have been a century ago, and able to stand next to the Waldorf Astoria on Park Avenue on equal footing,” added Mr Carr.

A vision of W Hotels, Aloft’s stylish urban attitude is set to shake up the European mid-market hotel scene.

With more than 40 hotels open since its June 2008 debut, Aloft Hotels has become the talk of the hospitality industry by going global while in launch mode. Aloft currently operates hotels in five countries – the USA, Canada, China, the United Arab Emirates and India, with Belgium marking its sixth destination. Besides opening its first hotel in Europe with the Aloft Brussels Schuman, Aloft is continuing its global expansion with further openings planned in India and the USA as well as brand introductions in Thailand and the UK.

Aloft Brussels Schuman will boast atmospheric public spaces where guests can mix and mingle, read the paper, work on laptops, play a game of pool or grab a drink with friends at the re:mix^SM lounge and w xyz^SM bar. The w xyz bar is set to quickly become one of the places to be in the EU quarter. A destination bar for hotel guests and local residents alike, the w xyz bar is the ideal place to have a cocktail with friends or dance the night away at one of the many DJ evenings.

The spacious guest rooms (minimum of 28m²) will feature the brand’s signature ceilings of nearly three meters high, oversized windows and an ultra-comfortable bed as well as roomy walk-in showers and bath amenities created by Bliss^® Spa. Each Aloft room will also be equipped with complimentary wireless Internet access and a unique plug-and-play connectivity solution which connects most electronic devices to the 42″ flat-screen TV, turning the room into a high-tech office as well as an entertainment centre.

Travellers will be able to de-stress and re-energize in the re:charge^SM fitness centre whilst the 24-hour grab & go food and beverage area re:fuel^SM by Aloft is a one-stop, offering sweet, savory and healthy food, snacks and beverages.

For work meetings, training courses and presentations, the hotel’s Tactic meeting rooms, which are equipped with the latest generation of audiovisual hardware, provide a creative space for groups of up to 50 people.

Aloft Brussels Schuman is the fifth Starwood Hotel in Belgium, joining Le Méridien Brussels, Sheraton Brussels Hotel, Sheraton Brussels Airport Hotel and Four Points by Sheraton Brussels.

Isabelle Jamet a débuté sa carrière en 1995 en qualité de Banquet Sales Coordinator au Château de Montvillargenne en France. Depuis, elle a occupé différents postes à responsabilités notamment au département Sales du Hyatt Regency Paris Charles De Gaulle. Après avoir passé plus de 8 ans en France, elle a décidé de quitter le pays pour la Belgique où elle a travaillé au Dolce La Hulpe à Bruxelles en tant que Director of Sales. Isabelle Jamet a participé, en qualité de Director of Sales & Marketing, au lancement du Square Brussels Meeting Center. En 2010, elle est venue renforcer l’équipe du Starwood Brussels Complex en tant qu’Assistant Director of Sales. Elle a ensuite repris la fonction de Director of Sales après le départ de Dean Bannon et s’occupe, des ventes, du marketing, de la réservation et du guest service. Dans sa nouvelle fonction, Isabelle Jamet supervise une équipe d’une 20aine de personnes et travaille sous la direction de Jan Nielsen, Area Manager de la Belgique et de la Scandinavie et General Manager du Starwood Brussels Complex. Isabelle a 38 ans et est de nationalité française.

Isabelle Jamet raconte à propos de sa nouvelle fonction: «Il n’y a rien de plus satisfaisant que de relever de nouveaux défis et de pouvoir concrétiser ces projets avec l’aide d’une équipe formidable.
