Slovenian tourism approaches 2008 results at the end of 2009

By Freesun News at 5 February, 2010, 11:25 am

According to figures from the national statistics office, tourist arrivals in November 2009 were down 3% on the same period of the previous year. Numbers were highest among tourists from Italy, Austria, Germany, Croatia and Serbia. Mountain destinations recorded an increase in the number of overnight stays compared to last year, while coastal destinations and health resorts recorded a drop. Nevertheless provisional figures show that Slovenian tourism ended 2009 close to the break-even point.

In November 2009 almost 141,000 tourist arrivals were recorded in tourist accommodation establishments, which is 3% down on November 2008. Arrivals of foreign tourists were 6% down on figures from one year ago. Tourists generated over 388,000 overnight stays, or 6% fewer than in November last year (foreign tourists generated 8% fewer overnight stays and domestic tourists 4% fewer overnight stays).

Foreign visitors accounted for 50 % of overnight stays by tourists in November 2009. The greatest number of overnight stays was by tourists from Austria (26%), followed by tourists from Italy (22%), Germany (8%), Croatia (6%), Serbia (4%), the Russian Federation (4%) and Japan (2%).

Health resorts recorded 44% of all overnight stays in November 2009. They were followed by coastal destinations (19%), mountain destinations (9%) and Ljubljana (11%). The number of overnight stays by tourists in Ljubljana was the same as in November last year. In the same comparison the number of overnight stays by tourists in mountain destinations was up by 5%, while the number of overnight stays by tourists was down in coastal destinations by 9% and in health resorts by 11%.

According to figures from local tourism employees and organisations, occupancy of accommodation capacities during the Christmas and New Year holiday period was very good. This applies in particular to the period at the end of the year (New Year’s Eve), especially in health resorts and winter sports centres.

According to figures from the national statistics office, provisional figures regarding the number of guests and their overnight stays in the first eleven months once again confirm the estimate that Slovenian tourism ended 2009 close to its target of breaking even. According to provisional figures from the national statistics office, 1% fewer overnight stays by tourists were recorded in tourist accommodation establishments between January and November 2009 than in the same period last year.
