Taiwan Golden Rain Trees in Taitung County present natural wonder

By Freesun News at 15 October, 2008, 11:48 am

Taitung County, Oct. 14 (CNA) Autumn is the best time to observe
one of nature’s wonders in Taitung County in eastern Taiwan, where
Taiwan Golden Rain Trees are splashing a lovely bright yellow before
their blossoms on the top of the canopy fall like golden showers to
make way for a sea of pink seed pods.

Experts in the local travel industry said Tuesday that the best
locations to admire the colorful foliage change in Taitung County
include the mountainous areas along the route linking the townships
of Jinfong, Daren and Dawu, areas along Taiwan provincial road No.
11, the East Rift Valley near the Luye tea farm, and areas along
County Road No. 197.

The Golden Rain Tree is a medium-sized deciduous tree with a
dense round crown composed of ascending branches. It grows to about
15 meters tall. During the cooler season of autumn, its flowering
panicles burst into a yellow shower of blossoms on the top of the
canopy.

Shortly after the clusters of flowers reach their peak and fall,
another beautiful stage occurs when the trees go into their seed pod
cycle, with the delicate pink lantern-like capsules creating another
colorful transformation by turning pink, red and then brown.

The Golden Rain Tree found in Taiwan is an indigenous subspecies
called the Koelreuteria elegans formosana and said to be more
beautiful than the variety found in other countries.

The subtropical trees can also be found in Taiwan’s major cities,
including Taipei and Taichung.
