While the nation reflects on the hugely successful conclusion of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the country’s biggest tourism company Tourvest Inbound Operations (TIO) and its specialist sports event activation management company, T.E.A.M are celebrating the culmination of years of hard work. While the country partied its way through the World Cup, behind the scenes T.E.A.M had its hands full handling all the travel arrangements for 7 out of 17 FIFA sponsors, which amounted to a staggering 67 000 people.
In preparation, T.E.A.M decided to take over an enormous space at Kyalami Racetrack, which became the unit’s depot for the despatch of hundreds of coaches. They also set up a headquarters at OR Tambo International Airport, in Johannesburg, where a team waited, ready to receive the thousands travelling to South Africa.

Just a few of T.E.A.M’s behind-the-scenes accomplishments include:
9 790 vehicle movements for the duration of the World Cup
260 vehicle movements for the opening game and 295 vehicle movements for the final match
No vehicles operated by T.E.A.M were involved in any accidents during the World Cup
4 550 kilograms of ice for cooler boxes used during the event
160 000 litres of diesel was used countrywide for coaches
The depot wash bays were in operation for 20 hours every day and every single coach was washed on a daily basis
600 staff members were used on the ground to facilitate operations, 10% of which took leave from their normal jobs to work on the project and 30% were previously unemployed
88 000 room nights were sold by T.E.A.M
67 000 guests were accommodated over the duration of the World Cup
100 500 sets of linen were used by T.E.A.M’s guests alone
The next big event for T.E.A.M will be the Danone Nations Cup, the world’s top football tournament for children between the ages of 10 and 12, to be held in South Africa in October this year. Martin Wiest, TIO’s CEO, explains, “As a result from our involvement in the FIFA World Cup, we were approached to handle the Danone Nations Cup, which is includes teams from 42 countries, with a total of 2 500 people travelling to participate in the event.”
Discussing future opportunities, T.E.A.M MD, Philip Bourdin says: “We are lucky, in that South Africa is blessed with excellent sporting opportunities, from the Tri-nations, to the Super 12 and regularly visiting cricket sides – there’s plenty of bread and butter business to fill in the gaps.” He adds that T.E.A.M will look at sports at school and varsity level, as international teams may come out to play in tournaments against local sides.
The massive expertise garnered over the past five years has also encouraged T.E.A.M to confidently look towards future sporting events, including 2012 Olympics Games to be held in London, 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games to be held in Brazil. T.E.A.M is now in the process of opening offices in Rio de Janeiro as well as London in conjunction with two leading tour operators in their respective cities.
